Our smart / data driven society is infiltrating the fabric of our daily lives. Algorithms frame our news, drones take care of surveillance and 3d printers challenge craftsmanship. What are the social and cultural implications of emergent technologies on design? How can designers come up with meaningful interventions in this technology driven society?

During this debate we will explore how design can be a tool to prise open complex themes and issues.

Tijmen is the creative lead of SETUP,  a cultural research centre on the fusion of culture and technology. The critical group of researchers dares to design the brave new world, and infuse it with human values, freedoms and opportinuties for creativity. To make this happen SETUP organises events such as workshop, lectures and presentations where people can share new knowledge, questions, best practices and best failures.

Mike Thompson is a critical designer whose studio Thought Collider  focuses on the exploration of the meanings and values that can be derived from alternative ways of experiencing built and mediated environments, motivated by emerging technologies.

Avular helps drone operators, research institutions and other companies with obtaining meaningful data from the skies. Our systems gather the data for a variety of applications, but mainly for industrial inspections, surveying and agricultural applications.

Avular's PrecisionScout is the new benchmark for safe drone design, allowing operators to focus on the imagery. The PrecisionScout is the best choice for industrial environments, and inspection tasks, that require a very high level of accuracy.

The VPRO medialab in Eindhoven aims to pick up innovative technology driven and design trends that will have an impact on the journalistic landscape of the future. As a designer with strong interest in new technology Steye Hallema tinkers with new tools and devices and explores how these can be meaningful for journalist.

The medialab collebaorates with Design Academy Eindhoven in a  minor on design for journalism (Danielle Arets, Mike Thompson, Isabelle Makay).

Design Debates

Eindhoven strives to be the Design Capital of Europe. These ambitions make sense, with a flourishing design network, impressive design and art galleries, a smart and creative region and of course the world famous Dutch Design Week.
A Design Capital needs a platform to discuss, feed the design climate, to cross boundaries with other disciplines and of course connect all players (and players-to-be) within the field. Therefore Eindhoven-based cultural and educational institutions Design Academy Eindhoven, MU, The New Institute, Capital D founded the Design Debates platform. The platform is supported by critical friends: Baltan Laboratories, Alice, Capital D. Every month Design Debates Eindhoven will host an afternoon debate at the Designhuis in Eindhoven.
